Columbia Basin Culture Tour

Michele Dupas

Functional and sculptural clay designs

Clay allows me to convey my narrative sculpturally, which I cannot express with my "left brain." Through the processes of hand-building, coiling, and slip-casting I can contemplate these issues non-verbally. I am enthralled with the use of various materials to create trompe l'oeil textures,
which mimic those of the original object—glazes first and foremost, but also found objects (toys, jewellery, stones, fabric) that enhance the effects of my glaze technique. My work tends to be whimsical and animated, using bright colours that suggest a child-like quality.
