This
current body of work stems from
a love of pattern and texture
and is inspired by baskets,
textiles and paper vessels. I
draw from a variety of
traditional and non-traditional
methods to achieve these forms
and surfaces, combining thrown
elements, patterned slabs, wood
firing, salt glazing and paper
templates The vessel format I
reference is inspired by ceramic
traditions from medieval England
to Japanese wood fired wares and
Scandinavian design, yet is
specific to this time and place.
The pieces are fired in
atmospheric kilns to enhance the
play between clay, texture and
glaze. The firing is a catalyst
for my creative process,
yielding surfaces of subtle
complexity that inspire new
directions and explorations.
These pots represent a
culmination of experiences and
influences, drawing from several
fields of craft media. Their
common thread is a joy in making
and a love of material, and it
is these qualities that I strive
for in my work.
