Shelley Ross is a self-taught
watercolour artist with an
interest in subjects that come
from nature - the root systems
of trees, wildflowers, lichens
and mountain streams. A painting
begins with a hike in a forest
or along a mountain trail - to
spend time with the subject.
While Shelley's academic
background is in biology, in
nature, she sees colour before
classification, form and pattern
before species identification. A
field sketch is translated into
a painting using the transparent
quality of watercolour paint to
build colour. Often, it is not
so much about the finished
product as it is the painting
experience. For the last
twenty-five years, Shelley has
worked as a natural heritage
interpreter. She has a Bachelor
of Science degree in biology and
has worked with Parks Canada,
Ministry of Natural Resources in
Ontario, Saskatchewn Environment
and Resource Management, and the
Western Development Museum.
